On 15th January 2023, 20 volunteers from WFWP Malaysia held an early Chinese New Year celebration with the elderly and special needs residents at Shan Ai Handicapped Welfare Home in Cheras, Selangor. The person in charge of the Welfare Home, Mr Wong, welcomed the WFWP members warmly. He explained the background of the Home, which currently provides shelter for 15 lone seniors who require special care and attention.
In her speech, the President of WFWP Malaysia, Madam Lina Cheng, explained that the Lunar New Year is not only a celebration of the beginning of a new year but also to celebrate the reunion of families and loved ones. She thanked Shan Ai for giving WFWP an opportunity to spend time with the elders and bring warmth and cheer to them for the festive season.

The old folks had a really fun and exciting afternoon playing games with our volunteers and exercising their hands and feet through action songs led by our emcee, Ms. Jamie. They were especially happy when our volunteers sang some of their favourite oldies from the 80s. There was also a session of “Yee Sang”, a Chinese traditional dish whereby family members gather around the table, and lift up colourful strips of fish and shredded vegetables as a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor.

Some of the elders had difficulty moving around and required spoon-feeding. Our volunteers served them delicious food and desserts sponsored by donors. The elders’ joy doubled when new clothes and angpows (a red packet containing money) were distributed to them. We really felt like a family celebrating the new year together.
Not only did the elders enjoy the programme, but so did our volunteers. A first-time volunteer, Mdm. Tan, 61, expressed her joy for being given the opportunity to share love and kindness with old folks who have lost their families. Mr and Mrs Kang, a young couple who brought groceries all the way from a neighbouring town, thought the programme was very meaningful.

With the generous support from donors and well-wishers, WFWP was able to buy groceries, household goods and essential items needed by the Home. A big thank you to all sponsors and volunteers for their kind contribution!
